Guangzhou, the city, plays a large role in China's trade with other nations. Before the 19th century foreign traders worked and lived in this trading port, and they were not allowed to venture into the hinterland. It later became the rallying point for people's movements bent on overthrowing the last Chinese monarchy. Its Chinese roots may be traced as far back as the 3rd century BC. It survived Japanese military occupation during the Second World War. Highlights for tourists visiting the city include Western Han Nanyue King Tomb Museum and Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall. International business people attend the famous Canton Trade Fair held semiyearly in Guangzhou.
