Modern Shanghai has a Western flair to it. You get the feeling as you walk along the city streets. The city was once a treaty port with many foreign countries governing their parts of the city commonly known as concessions. The city passed through a period of relative neglect between 1949 and 1989. In 1990 Shanghai's Pudong area officially became a special development zone, and the city once again started to grow. Today the futuristic Oriental Pearl TV Tower, and the Jinmao Mansion have reclaimed for Shanghai the first place among cities in China. The Yuyuan Garden, the France Concession and the Jade Buddha Temple represent the elegant old Shanghai.
