Founded in the 19th year of Northern Wei Dynasty (495) by an itinerant Indian Buddhist preacher on a mission to China, Shaolin Temple enjoyed a history of over 1500 years. At the height of its prosperity, during the Tang Dynasty (618-907), Shaolin patrons donated many splendid halls, decorated with Alhambresque roofs. It housed 2500 monks, many of who were trained in martial arts with mastery in the use of weapons. These Shaolin monks helped Li Shimin (627-649), the first Tang Dynasty Emperor, win a battle. Later in the 16th century they helped to get rid of foreign coastal pirates. Several emperors supported Shaolin with royal patronage, and made it "the first among Buddhist temples in the world".
