The Emperor of China held the title: Son of Heaven. He ruled by divine right - a mandate from heaven. In return, he was held accountable for the welfare of his people. A virtuous monarch, much favoured by the gods, could set his people free from hunger, want, and natural calamities. One of the Emperor's sacred duties at the winter solstice was to perform rituals and to offer prayers for rich harvests and peace in the land. He worshipped at the altar in the Temple of Heaven. The Circular Altar Mound, the Imperial Vault of Heaven and the Hall of Prayer for a Good Harvest all depict celestial order and harmony. The half circle formed by the northern wall represents heaven while the square shaped southern wall represents the earth. The unique blue tiles reflect the color of the sky. The triple tiers add up to the mystical number of nine that also symbolizes heaven. A prayer uttered at the Echo Wall will circulate round the World. Why not give it a try yourself?
